This year, more than ever before, it’s vital that we support our small businesses – especially those in our own communities. With many states and municipalities reinstating “lockdown” during this critical time of year for gift-buying, it’s harder than ever for small businesses to compete with the Amazons and Targets of the world. If you hope your favorite boutique is still afloat post-pandemic, consider supporting them now as you buy for the holiday season (and wear a fucking mask, for the love of all that is good and holy).
What follows is just a small sampling of some of my favorite, affordable (real affordable, not Oprah-affordable) gifts available in person and online from some very special small businesses across the U.S.
Be sure to take a look back through my past Monday Collections for more ideas, and also consider buying from some less traditional sources, such as:
- Find your favorite indie band online for music and merch direct from the source
- Make an appointment to shop at a local indie bookstore – they usually have fun gifts and local goods in addition to books and games
- Buy gift cards to local restaurants, wineries, breweries, and COVID-safe experiences like kayaking, outdoor movies and catered garden dinners
- Search Etsy with the name of your city or state for locally-inspired gifts
- Check out small, local grocers for regionally-sourced products like honey, candles, soaps, cheeses and baked goods
- Look up your local museums – this time of year a lot of museums hold annual fundraising events, many of which are being held as online silent auctions this year instead. Fundraising auctions are a great way to find incredible art, crafts and jewelry at a steal!
- Do a search of the arts markets and galleries in and around your town – many are doing online sales for the first time ever
I hope that you find some inspiration for spoiling your loved ones (or yourself!) this season!
